Stuff to think about- generation gap

Heya,

I would like to keep it as short as possible, but this is going to be hard.

I know that if you’re coming here to read my messages, you probably know something about the internet, most of you have an mp3 player and a player on their computer so they can sync their mp3 with it.

What scares me off is the amount of people of MY age (I’m 31 so quite young) and around it (let’s speak about the 25-40 yrs old class) who STILL DO NOT KNOW WHAT AN MP3PLAYER IS, who don’t even know what iTunes is, and HOW THEY CAN BUY MUSIC ON THE INTERNET. Can you believe this. A friend of mine had a few chats with people of this generation, from different social classes, in 24 hours time, by just living (you know, shop and see old time friends, stuff like that) and we all come to this conclusion. Our target public doesn’t know how to find, hear, and buy our music. My target public isn’t 16 years old, let’s face it, although everyone is welcome, that’s not my point here, but I grew up with this older generation of people. Naturally they don’t even know that I’m still active! That we still ARE, and that we’ll always be.

How did we let things go to that point, ALL OF US? Fortunately things are reversible with a little time, so it’s not a huge deal, but how could we let this happen? So, do me a favour my friends, get your parents to know how to shop music (even if they don’t buy anything! after all we don’t care), get your friends who aren’t into tech stuff to do that too. So we’ll have a better sight of what the future of music will be.

The internet was the death and the revival of the music industry, now it’s again its death, and tomorrow its revival again, this time for good. Let’s remain confident. Let’s not charge those who get stuff off torrents all the time. A let’s smile.

Enough for today, summertime now, and I’ve got a lawn to mow.

For privacy reasons I have to split my Facebook in two parts. I’ve just updated this site’s Facebook link so you can add me as Laurent Airwave as a friend. My personal profile will now be only for private purposes, which means that you don’t have to add that profile to your friends if you’re just a fan.

brand new site and others

Heya there,

As you all know, I’ve been managing this site on my own for about a year and I’ve acquired self-confidence and creative experience, so I think it’s about time to design a brand new website, or two, or even three, from scratch this time, and totally on my own. Today’s tools make it easier for me, so why not?

I don’t know when they will be online. All I can say, is that this site will remain active until the new one gets published, and that it should be online when the new Airwave album gets its official release. Oops, I said too much.

That’s it for now, but you can follow my tweets, so you stay up-to-date!

Take care

WHAT? NO UPDATE FOR 2 WEEKS? Progrez Tracklist inside

Aloha everyone,

yes, it’s been two weeks. Why? Because I thought that I had nothing important to tell you. In fact I had...

So under this message, the latest progrez show’s tracklisting in full. If you ask me, this is serious music, and I’m really happy that we get truly unique artists on the Banshee labels. Keep going on this way guys!

And, meanwhile, I have to tell you that we decided to release another Airwave single, the very last one off Touareg. It was released a year ago, already. It’s time to close the book and move on! The last one but for sure not the least as it’s the album track that got the best response from the crowd AND the dj’s.

NEXT Airwave single: URBAN TOUAREG including brand new mixes. I got my hands on a few already, and WOWERZ. They simply pwn the original!

Have a GREAT week all, and stay tuned, while I’m working.

PS: There’s more big news coming. But as I promised the boy to keep my mouth until the very last minute, I will respect his request.

I hope you like the other remixes that I made too. There are a few others coming up. Ville Lope « Blowfish », and other mixes I’ve done for Yves Deruyter are on the way...

moving again!

heyaaa,

So, I’m moving for the fifth time in 10 years. This is gonna take a while, but good news is that I should be back very very soon this time.

You might be 20 and dreaming of life without your parents, on your own... I am gonna do the exact opposite. I’m a family addict.

Moving from Flanders to Liège is gonna be a huge change because I have been living in Flanders for more than 10 years in total. I’m going to miss the local mentality, the neighbours, the pets around. But it’s for the better. So Liège get prepared!

thoughts of the week

heya my friends,

while putting all of my stuff into boxes -yes I’m moving houses for the 5th time in 10 years!- with all recent events in mind, I’m having some time to think about the world we live in, and share my thoughts with you.

Many complain that music in general has become extremely generic, and I understand them. Of course their perception is biased by the fact that anyone can easily make music nowadays, but I tend to agree with them. What I don’t like is that this problem remains unsolved.

There are many big factors that put music into this situation and for me the biggest are the following.

1) People don’t think further than « straight out of the box » anymore. Every single piece of data, information, is being formatted, prepared, and gets through as if it was a read-only file.

2) People act therefore like sheep and seem to be constantly under medication

3) Anyone can make music, but it also means that anyone can throw it online, which means a huge increase of available music, apparently too much input for the outside world.

And I think the following could be a part of the solution, it’s called E major:

1) Educate people more. not only music is the concern, Culture with a HUUUGE C is. It’s at stake right now. Many think that politics make people dumber than they are. Obviously they are right. Politics made our parents dumb. But the rise of the internet, new technology, makes it easier for us to show them that they’ve been lied all of this time. Therefore we need to educate everyone. When you buy music software (or if you’re a respectless moron, when you get it off torrents), there’s more in there than you might think!! Once you discover it, SHARE your experience with others. There’s Youtube, Flickr, twitpic, facebook. WHATEVER it is, use it and share your culture with others.

2)Execute: Argue less, create more. How many are spending hours, days, weeks arguing about who’s the best actor in BSG?? There are only 24 hours in a day. 86400 seconds. In a few we won’t be here anymore.

3) Enjoy what you’re doing in life, whatever it is. It might be work, creative work, manual work, reject what you don’t like and only keep what’s good for you. Money won’t make you a lot better. Knowledge, Culture, Art (even replacing tyres is ART for me!!), those things will make you a better person. If there are minor parts that you don’t like, make them more enjoyable.

Those 3 E’s are just an excerpt of what our society can become in a few years. You can add your own E’s next to that.

I’ve had the toughest days of my life lately, and things will get worse with our soon to arrive baby. Teaching made me understand a lot about the way we are. But I am trying to enjoy every single second of my life by executing most possible tasks at once, and am educating myself today to know tomorrow how to do things I couldn’t make yesterday. This is what pushes me forward.

Share your thoughts on this if you have time. If not, I understand. Enjoy, I just wanted to share it with you.

Take care
Laurent

Here’s why I put a link here, so they can click on it and visit my main agency’s website.

Teaching Computer Music!

Hello,

This day has finally come... I am now sharing my seventeen year experience in music with students, most of the time at Academix, Brussels’ most famous dj school.

Many different people come and follow the lecture. From the 17 year old turntablist to the 48 year old
amateur who wants to open a lounge bar, all interested in music making, dj’ing...

From now on I will do this regularly. And it looks like they like me and the way I explain things, which helps a lot Happy

Back behind decks

Hi everyone,

Today I would like to inform you that I’ll soon return behind decks, and this seriously.

You might take it as a betrayal, as I said that I quit... let me tell you what’s changed my mind and its purpose.

In order to move on in life, I would like to teach what I’ve learned through the years. Therefore I need special certifications that cost thousands of dollars. I’ll need at least 6 or 7, each costing 1500$ at least.

So, here’s why I played new years, here’s why I played in Athens, and thank God I did well! On the longer term I would like to open my own school with all required certifications and that is why.

So, if you are a promoter reading this message: WHERE ARE YOU?

The reason why I wanted to quit was because YOU promoters treat a lot of people including me the wrong way. You think you’ll take X instead of Y and that’ll be the same, and cheaper. EVERY artist on this planet is unique. That’s what the pop business understood years ago, and that is what YOU don’t get. It looks like we are way too humble with you.

I have 13 years behind me, playing big places, with lots of fans... What Else do you need this time?? You want it cheap all the time, but you don’t take your responsibilities, the time. I have my friend Fly who will deal with you now, as Banshee is to announce the launch of Banshee Entertainment, our own Booking agency that will feature all of our Banshee artists.

To make this clear: those who know me personally will tell you how humble I am. I am not doing this in order to be the next Superstar DJ. But there are fans all around the world whining on facebook and msn EVERY SINGLE DAY as they want to see me in their country, and I can’t stand that YOU promoters are not doing your job. There are opportunities. The purpose is right. NOW IT’S WORKTIME!

Let's move on...

My dearest friends,

In the last two years, you read a lot of messages of mine regarding the Superstar DJ’s out there. I was really harsh. Maybe it was too harsh.

I forgot something: some of those guys are good friends of mine, and they have a story. You don’t know how it all started for your favourite artist and how hard it was for them during their childhood, their dj career at first... Some had to finish the night cleaning the club or they wouldn’t get paid! I won’t give names here.

That is a very big mistake of mine. Why did I keep bashing those guys after all? I’m not jealous, they can have all of their gigs, and get well paid, it’s overexhausting, I wouldn’t stand it, honestly. I think that I got frustrated at some point. But after all, we can’t complain. It’s a lack of humility, end of story.

It’s time for me to show how humble I am. It’s time for all of us to see what brings us together, and forget about what separates us. It’s all a question of balance and karma after all. And believe me, positivity and humility always pay off. This is just entertainment after all.

There are things I won’t agree with ever, but I have to recognize that I’ve been a little too far at times.

Now let’s move on...

|

Upcoming Releases

Quadri, the first definitive Collection for Airwave, featuring the very best of it, will be out by next month. It also includes three exclusive remixes of my classics Ladyblue, Innerspace, and my very first Airwave track, I want to believe.

March will see the release of my new Mixed compilation for Bonzai DJ sessions. It features 23 tracks, and I selected the finest releases amongst my favourite records at the moment. Both mixes are outstanding. Tracklist to be revealed soon.

Batignolles Blues, Airwave’s next single (feat. Ludovic Meyer on the Sax), will be out within the same period approximately. It features remixes by Subtara and Maor Levi among others. More mixes to be confirmed.

And by the end of March, Planisphere’s « Cyborganic » , a 7-track mini-LP will be out. Outstanding music

Don’t forget also DJ Fire « Transatlantic » (with a massive Antidote remix) and Antidote « Fantastic/Four » which are due out within a few.

I have a lot going now, as you can see.

Take care
Laurent

No more Progrez on NRJ Belgium!!

Dear friends,

I’m coming back with sad news...

After almost 4 years of collaboration, NRJ Belgium has decided unilaterally to put an end to it.

This decision was apparently the consequence of Ben’s departure in September (this guy was and still is the brain behind the Extravadance show and gave me my chance back in 2005) which led to his replacement by someone else who clearly was put under pressure, or else wanted to give my slot to a friend of his.

I can’t tell what happened exactly as the boy hasn’t replied to any of my e-mail in the last two months, hasn’t downloaded any of my shows within that same period, and got back to me by announcing another DJ at the time of my slot with some spam e-mail, and then a second time to tell me I wasn’t welcome anymore due to my angry e-mails, and that this decision was based on the original schedule planned by my friend Ben, who has NOTHING to do with this.

This is a terrible lie. Nothing that might interest you peepz, I just wanted you to know what happened, and to inform you that you won’t be able to hear my sets on NRJ Belgium within the Extravadance Show, which I badly regret.

I would have done anything to avoid this. But due to the circumstances it’s not possible anymore.

I would like to thank Ben for putting all shows together, giving a lot of us their chance to get a NATIONAL broadcast (which meant a lot to me), for those years, for his friendship. Because, let’s face it, anything that brings us together is timeless, negativity isn’t. It’s time to turn the page, move on, and build a better world around ourselves.

End of story.

Laurent

gig-thoughts of the week

hello my friends,

This is some kind of an open letter to anyone who feels concerns for our dance music scene in general.

I hope that you watched the NYE videos that I posted last week. That gig was amazing and I’m sure now that the Toronto people know what I’m capable of.

I think that playing on decks and adding keyboards by ear in a totally improvized way is something that no single big artist can do. They’re too busy with their haircut and their whoring in general. It’s probably the next step for me after my Ableton period, so I can prove everyone attending that I’m worth what they’re paying for.

This is the least I can do when someone books me for a gig and flies me over to his/her country. I’m not trying to be good anymore, I just want to be your best experience, this at maximum risk. That is why I’ve become picky regarding bookings, and that is why I’ll stay that way.

Keep in mind though that I’m not a money-whore either, as I do this for a few hundred euros a gig. Nothing more. Many people imagine that I’m getting big money. Let me tell you, this ain’t true at all. As everyone else, I have bills that I can’t pay on time! If it were me, I’d play everywhere for free... but those bills need to get paid, too!! And I have my stuff that gets damaged with every single flight too!! And now my keyboard died after dozens of flights... LOL!

Meanwhile, it makes me sad that some others just have to play for nothing because otherwise they’d have no gigs, but honestly we can’t blame people for getting big money, either. They can have it. People who are a little into this music thing won’t have any hassle finding out who is better in this scene. We might be surprised! Are we circus-clowns or are we the guys with real skills? This is the question every single artist has to ask him/herself. And most importantly: are we absolutely worth the fees our managements ask event and club promoters?? I did this dozens of times throughout my 13 year-and-going career, and I just wish everyone did the same.

A huge reset on that point is on the way. I can feel that our fans want more, specifically when they are facing themselves the consequences of a bad economy, bad politics, while they have a lot less money than they had a few years ago. And this is where artists demanding less money, less attention and above all less fame, who just want to sit where they deserve to be in life, will overcome the huge crisis we’ve been through in the last 6 years. This is where I want to stand, this is why I still want to visit some cities and play gigs at times. Not for fame, not for money, just for the friendship, the social thing about dance music. The big heads will soon or late disappear.

To force this huge reset, you all need to be extremely careful, and by all means, please my friends, PAY FOR WHAT/WHO IS WORTH IT!! And from my end, make sure that I’ll always give the very best of myself at a gig, whatever happens, and even for a very low fee!

See you in Athens this weekend if you’re in greece. For everyone else, think about this for a second or two, as I am myself stressing about it all the time

Take care
Laurent
